Book Review: 'Nights of Rain and Stars' by Maeve Binchy

I first heard of Maeve Binchy through the film ‘Circle of Friends’ – a movie I watched mainly due to Minnie Driver. That was such a long time ago, and even though I always see her books locally, it was only a few months ago that I decided to buy one of her books and find out for myself her style of storytelling.

Well, it’s actually very lightweight, a perfect read for an afternoon in the beach or for waiting in the airport, especially if you’re off to an island vacation! This book is set in a small village in one of the many islands of Greece and it starts with a tragic event which affects everyone in the island but the book mainly focuses on six tourists and some of the islanders themselves and how that tragedy sets them off to examine their own lives and the importance of the people they have run away from. There are problems with bossy fathers, violent lovers, boorish lovers, children who are despairing for attention, and wives that have simply moved on with their lives. Their stay in the island ultimately bonds them together and forms friendships that survive even after they have gone back to their homes.

What Makes this Book Tick? All of us want that vacation where we can just run away from our present lives and take a breather! This book allows us to have that, if only through our imagination.
