I am not really a big coffee drinker but I read this interesting article today about civet coffee. Apparently, civets know how to pick the sweetest coffee berries, but, they only eat the berry - and discard the bean! Yup, they shit out the bean which we then harvest because apparently, by passing through the civet's digestive system, the bean loses its acidity and even tastes better! How's that for drinking something that literally passed through something's ass!
It's no laughing matter as each cup of this rare coffee costs US$50 (around 2000 pesos per cup). So now, since the demand is so big, many enterprising coffee farmers are keeping the civets alive so that they can do their, uhum, job! See, this is an example that God created each creature for a purpose!
It used to be that coffee farmers killed these poor things because they thought they were coffee pests!
