Three Things to Do When Your Utang Na Loob is Being Abused

Utang na loob is a good trait to cultivate, especially since it's important to acknowledge always, the people who helped us reach where we are now.  However, sometimes, this trait is abused by some unscrupulous people in our lives, who feel that they deserve more payback.  What to do?

Well, first is to be firm with them and tell them that you are not a bottomless pit of gratitude or the Central Bank of the Philippines - and that you have bills of your own.

Second, is not to be victimized by their emotional abuse.  You got to where you are also because of your hard work.  Yeah, they may have helped you but if they abuse that, you should put your foot down and tell them, you did your job too!

Third is to be assertive. The truth is, if they feel they can uto-uto you or push you around, they will!  They will milk you to the last centavo of your life!  So say no and be firm!  Say, "I am not a pushover anymore.  Yes, you have been kind to me before, but now, you're abusing my kindness.  I am putting my foot down!"  Or something along that line.

If people helped you before, they should really not expect anything in return.  A good deed always leads to good karma, so let the universe take care of things.
