Subic Resort Review: Blue Rock Resort and Floating Bar

As I was looking for a place where me and my friends could stay in Subic at a modest budget, I came across Blue Rock Resort and Floating Bar in the Internet.  Well, the resort is located outside the Subic Freeport Zone, along that strip of resorts with a beach front that begins with Ocean View Resort and extends up to White Rock.  Blue Rock is somewhere in between that.

The rooms we got were reasonably priced.  The room at the back cost 1675 pesos (US$40) per night and since we got an extra mattress, we had to shell out 275 pesos (US$7) more.  My friends, who got a beachfront room, paid 2500 pesos (US$60) and had to pay an extra 550 pesos (US$14) for the extra person and the extra mattress.

The resort has a modest swimming pool - which I think would not be safe for kids - since it was deep - and beside it was the restaurant with a floating bar extension.  You'd be ferried to and fro the bar by this thing that looks like a floating waiting shed, where two young men use their muscular power to pull the thing through!  We weren't able to try the bar because it was raining and the waves looked choppy - so we just decided to eat in the restaurant - which was still a good idea - instead of going out and choosing a resto in the Subic area - since it was a cool, balmy evening and the sea breeze was pretty relaxing!

We decided on ordering their seafood platter, which had a crab, some tahong, calamares, and fish fillet.  We also got pinakbet, which did not taste quite like pinakbet.  It was an ok meal but not really yummy.  There was a young girl singing beside our table but she sang so inoffensively, and not too loudly, you can actually have a conversation while she's singing.

Our resto bill though reached around 1850 pesos for five people (US$44), which is a bit expensive since we were supposed to be in the province and not in Manila.

As for the rooms, they have cable TV and fast wifi and the bathroom is clean and the toilet flushes.  It is clean and simple and the mattress was actually comfortable.  For that rate, it was actually a good deal!  Unfortunately, they don't allow two men in one room - I don't know why - although I did chance upon a group of four young men in the restaurant and wondered where they were staying?  Anyway, I did not want to pick up a fight with a management on that rule, although it did seem a bit homophobic.

Anyhow, the staff are warm and helpful and the sand in the beach is powdery gray so it's ok to walk around sans slippers.  They also keep their beachfront clean.  The room though could smell of cigarette smoke or Zonrox as you enter, so I suggest you have them aired out first before you really settle in.
