I was introduced to Alan Rickman in Ang Lee's version of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. This is probably the best Hollywood adaptation of any Jane Austen movie. I already knew the story, but watching this version was like knowing the story for the first time! I was actually cheering for the Dashwood sisters as the movie ended!
Alan Rickman was perfect as Col. Brandon, and you can really feel the burden of his secret love for Marianne, played wonderfully by Kate Winslet. Just waiting, waiting for the right moment to profess his love.
He was one of my favorite actors and I last saw him playing the despicable judge in Sweeney Todd. He had this very clear way of pronouncing words which he used to great effect.
He will be greatly missed.
