Michael Williams: Superb as Dr. Jekyll

I last saw him in last year's 39 Steps, where he was nominated for Best Actor in a Play for my PinkFoxPatrol Theater Awards for 2011 - and he was pretty funny in that play!  This year, though, he plays an even more challenging role as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.  I know I already wrote about his acting in the review of this musical, but it's just that some performances stand out from the rest that it's worth writing aboutit in another blog article.  The theater season this year is still young (it's only the end of March) but most of the guys who would want to win the PinkFoxPatrol Best Actor in a Musical award for this year, may have a tough act to follow as Michael's performance here is the one to beat, as of yet, this year.

It's difficult to elicit fear in a live musical, but my friend and I were actually afraid of what he would do as his character killed and killed and killed with wanton evil. You would actually really hate Mr. Hyde here but of course, you'd realize, only one person is playing both, so to convey that feeling for a person was quite remarkable for me.

Theatre Review: The Magnificent Macabre Tale of Jekyll and Hyde

Although Jekyll and Hyde may not have that big famous song that most Broadway musicals, it is still quite fascinating to watch, especially that the book by Robert Louis Stevenson, is one of my all time favorite books!  There have been Hollywood versions and adaptations of this story and this is the first musical I have seen about this story.

Well, it is great to see that Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo can also direct!  I love the stage design and how it effectively anchors the story into who Dr. Jekyll is. I even love how she created a chorus who are always sinisterly looking back at the audience in most of the songs.  They don't move, they just stay in the background - with no lighting on them and no movement.  But once they come out as a chorus, wow, they become some sort of 'speaker' for the musical, the soul analyzing the agony Dr. Jekyll is going through.

Michael Williams is just impressive as the lead! Playing dual characters is not easy, but without much make-up, he was able to convey through voice, clever lighting and effective facial expressions, who Dr. Jekyll was and who Mr. Hyde was, as the latter appears more often in the second act of the musical.  The last scene where the two duel internally with each other is surely the scene that made many in the audience give the cast a standing ovation. It was just really impressive to see him do that scene really well!

As usual, I love Cris Villonco here.  I just love her voice and how cleverly she uses it to show emotion.  She gives her character tenderness yet she looks tough, and conveys her love for the doomed doctor by always believing that his good nature will win in the end.

One revelation last night was Kalila Aguilos.  Oh my god, listen to that voice, so clear, like a nightingale, it just wafts as she sings her songs - and she plays a hooker here, mind you.  And yeah, she is hot and sexy too, I'm sure the red-blooded males in the audience had their hearts racing as Dr. Jekyll touched her there!

This is also the first time I saw Junix Inocian act.  Wow, no wonder he was cast in Miss Saigon.  Such commanding performance.  He's like a rock and he commands the 'Greek chorus' swaying them that most of what we see is just a 'facade'.

Well, the material of this play is a bit disturbing but watch it and revel at how great Filipino actors are!

Best Actor - Play 2011 Nominees: MyFABE Theater Awards

I started watching local theater, seriously again this year.  I saw thirteen different plays and musicals this year and from those, I have come out with my own MyFABE Theater Awards for 2011.

I have mulled over this list for the past 11 months and in my opinion, these are the five best performances by an actor in a play in 2011.

BEST ACTOR (PLAY)

Joel Lamangan - Fake
Gerard Pizarras - Fake
Leo Rialp - Bawal Tumawid Nakamamatay
Siegfried Sepulveda - The Valley Mission Care
Michael Williams - 39 Steps

The winner will be announced on December 31, 2011.

Murder With A Funny Twist in '39 Steps'

This is the first Repertory play I've seen in a long, long time!  And I had a great time watching it!  I'm a big fan of Hitchcock's films but this doesn't veer into anything terrifying, instead it's so full of laughs - you'd be in awe at how these actors (especially Rem Zamora and Juliene Mendoza) segue into the different roles they play in this two-hour play.  You'd have to see it to enjoy it - I daresay they bring versatility to a higher standard!  Michael Williams and Liza Infante are both good too!

Another thing that impressed me was the way they used the props! It's maybe because I haven't seen any play for years, I am now in awe at they resourcefulness theater people have in utilizing the barest of props and make us believe it's the real thing!  It just made watching this play even more enjoyable to watch!  For example, four chairs which serve as a backdrop in a political rally, turns into a car!  Or a 'train' can first be seen through the front and then in the next scene, is scene from the side!  Just make watching the play pretty interesting!

Another observation in some of the plays I've seen these past two weeks - I mean Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah - they now include the audience INTO the play!  For example, in the rally scene in Zsa Zsa, the 'crowd' went into the audience to rally them to join and support Zsa Zsa.  In this play, the actual chases occur where the audience is!  They even passed through my row!!  And during the political rally scene where people had to clap, one of the actors tapped me in the shoulder and urged me to clap - and I did of course! Another reason why watching plays now is more engaging!

Well, I am definitely looking forward to the next Rep play!
