I have just finished watching Brothers and Sisters last night and I found to my surprise that the article I wrote about Aaron Villaflor zoomed to #1 in my Most Popular Posts - and these posts have to have high 7-day page views to be able to be in that list - and this guy topped it! Incredible! Found out later that he did something naughty in Vice Ganda's show. I just got a whiff of it from what I read on Twitter, but I'm sure it was titillating enough to give him such a boost in numbers! Oh well, so, I decided to post a new blog post about him right now so I could just update his pics for my blog. He does look incredibly cute! Too bad he has still eluded rightful stardom up to now....
I am actually not a fan of these two, but it's basically just because my tastes in movies or
TV don't hew closely to what they are doing. However, it doesn't mean I don't appreciate what they have been doing and have done in uplifting the image of
openly gay people to the
man-on-the-street! By working hard at their respective crafts, they have shown that gay people have as much chances of making it big in entertainment and in TV journalism if they choose too. That both openly talk about their personal relationships also show their humanity and that their mostly heterosexual fans haven't puked in unison just goes to show that for the man-on-the-street, those supposed to be taboo relationships are just fine.
Now if only they could lend their respective celebrity allure to the causes
Ladlad is fighting for, maybe gay rights can be given priority in this country.
I don't go to comedy clubs because I don't enjoy the humor that is being said there. That's also the reason why it has taken me so long to warm up to Vice Ganda. While most of my friends are fans of Showtime, I wonder why they enjoy watching the show - and I guess I don't really find what he's saying funny.
While the whole country bestowed box-office glory to him in Praybeyt Benjamin last year, breaking all-time box-office records, I couldn't care less, knowing that an American version of that movie, I thought, was funnier since it had Goldie Hawn, whom I really adored.
Fast forward to tonight, when I decided to pop in 'This Guy's In Love With You Mare' into my DVD player. First scene pa lang, I was in stitches na! I mean, any beki can totally relate to that really funny 10-minute opening scene. And I was hooked!!! I was not even planning to watch through the whole movie since it was already 2AM, but I was just enjoying myself for the full hour of the movie.
I was very impressed at how Vice Ganda has used his celebrity to push the envelope of depicting gay love to a mainstream audience. This has never been done before -as most of the really good comedians who do gay acting are actually straight. Dolphy and Joey de Leon are superb comedians who had done really funny gay sketches in their past movies - but these guys are as straight as you get.
However, Vice is as flaming a gay man as can be - and that he allows himself in his movies to be as 'womanly' as any man can be and be depicted as head over heels in love with a straight man - whew - I knew he was really pushing it - but judging from the box-office take of this movie - the audience had spoken - and they don't find anything wrong with it!
They might have even told their friends about it - since with those box-office numbers - word of mouth certainly brought more people into the moviehouses! I really feel bad for not supporting the movie when it really needed my support - especially that it was a movie with the central character being unabashedly gay!
So bravo Vice Ganda for your bravery along with the director Wenn Deramas - for telling stories - with strong gay lead characters who are not afraid to express their love explicitly - especially that Catholic country we are - our church can be our own worst enemy!
