Why Vice Ganda and Boy Abunda are Good for the Local Gay Community

I am actually not a fan of these two, but it's basically just because my tastes in movies or TV don't hew closely to what they are doing.  However, it doesn't mean I don't appreciate what they have been doing and have done in uplifting the image of openly gay people to the man-on-the-street!  By working hard at their respective crafts, they have shown that gay people have as much chances of making it big in entertainment and in TV journalism if they choose too.  That both openly talk about their personal relationships also show their humanity and that their mostly heterosexual fans haven't puked in unison just goes to show that for the man-on-the-street, those supposed to be taboo relationships are just fine.

Now if only they could lend their respective celebrity allure to the causes Ladlad is fighting for, maybe gay rights can be given priority in this country.

Heart Diño: The First Transgender Chairperson of the UP Diliman Student Council

It's great that the University of the Philippines took the lead and elected a transgender as their Student Council chairperson.  That's a first for the university.  Of course, there are many gay people in our government, many of them are just in the closet.  I guess it's easier for local officials to come out as gay since everybody knows what they do in their own city or province or barangay.  But the national level, like a senator, or vice-president, or even president, the going would be a bit tough since we're a Catholic country and you know what the priests say about us!

Anyhow, we wish Heart all the best during his tenure and I hope it will inspire more leaders of the gay persuasion to come out and be counted!

Boy Abunda: 2013 Ladlad Party List Congressional Candidate?

I don't know why it took so long for the people behind Ladlad to think of this?  Boy Abunda is probably the most high profile and openly gay personality in the Philippines today, and for him to represent the local gay community in the Congress would be a very good idea!  At least with him, you're sure that he could bring to the fore, issues that affect the marginalized gay community here in the Philippines.
