Movie Review: 'Bakit Lahat ng Guwapo May Boyfriend'

'Bakit Lahat ng Guwapo May Boyfriend' is a pretty witty title for a movie but don't be fooled by the gayness of the title - this is a heterosexual romcom and the gay storyline is just the frills that decorate the bow.

The movie starts with a bang but slowly drifts into hetero territory somewhere in the middle - and I realized, this is an Anne Curtis vehicle after all - so the story is going to be about her - and not about Paolo Ballesteros.

Anyhow, having Dennis Trillo as the eye candy is well worth the ticket price. There aren't that many laugh-out-loud scenes though and I find some of the lingo and the jokes about gay men, cliched already.

I'm sure today's younger gay men have a fresher take on love and finding out if a guy is beki.

Acting-wise though, Anne Curtis pouts and smiles her way throughout the movie, looking as pretty as ever, while the stylist allows Dennis Trillo to wear so many polo shirts that resemble my wardrobe. Paolo Ballesteros plays the wacky gay best friend but his role slowly fades into the background as the movie reaches its denouement.

I now understand why the director of The Third Party told me they wanted to veer away from cliches and stereotypes. It kinda drags the movie down and the jokes are repeated to gay people in the audience who have known those jokes for years.

Anyway, having another gay-themed movie from a big local studio coming at the heels of another one with A list actors is not bad at all. It looks like the Pinoy masa is already comfortable with local gay-themed movies.

Gawa pa more! Sana something witty and with bite!

The Psycopathic Women of A Secret Affair

What I couldn't understand in the movie A Secret Affair is how a supposedly smart and physically strong man like Derek Ramsay's character NOT get away from two psycopathic and mentally unstable women!  Shikes, even if they were as pretty as Anne Curtis and Andi Eigenmann's characters are in the movie, I would run AWAY from them, millions of miles AWAY from them!!  They are just BAD freakin' news!!

Also, you accept back a woman who ditches you in your wedding? Seriously? You let me spend like half a million pesos on our wedding and you leave me in the altar?  God, I'd kick her ass so far away from mine!  So many fish in the sea and I have to deal with somebody who treats me like shite?  Go freak somebody else's life beatch!  What you did to me is unforgivable!  And what does Derek Ramsay's character do?  He pleads for her to love him and she even has the gall to accuse him of cheating!  That got me really totally lost in the movie!  These are pretty strange characters!

Thank God this was just a movie so I could just suspend my disbelief for two hours or so.

There were several interesting conversation pieces in the movie and that provided some laughter moments.  Derek shirtless doesn't really do anything for me that's why I wasn't really excited to watch this movie. 

Movie Review: No Other Woman Provides An Entertaining Catfight

The long lines in the cinemas these past two weeks has surprisingly been for a local movie called No Other Woman which is about an adulterous affair and the catfight that ensues after.  Well, there's really not much spin you can put into an a story about adultery - it has been done very well so many times over in the past but what keeps the people interested in this movie is its deliciously sharp script which the audience has promptly posted in their Facebook profiles or regurgitated into their office or school conversations! It also does help that the guy they're fighting for is in fact drool-worthy and can believably be someone two attractive women would actually fight for! 

I have seen Anne Curtis in Who's That Girl, but she portrays a more mature role here, which she does well.  This is the first time I've seen Cristine Reyes act and she cleverly balances the retiscent nature of her character - uneasily uncomfortable with what she has to do to protect her turf.  As for Derek Ramsay, well, he's just plain delicious in the movie, like a cub these two lionnesses would want to cuddle in their arms!

It's great that another local movie is blasting Hollywood and some of its banal offerings this week.  This is the second straight adultery movie which I think did well in the tills - My Neighbor's Wife played to arguably lesser audience numbers but since it ran for two weeks, I assumed it also did well.  It's good that they've put the Sarah Geronimo-John Lloyd pacute act for a while.  What happens after two people fall in love is actually more exciting!
