Japanese Soprano Mako Nishimoto as Madame Butterfly

'Madame Butterfly' herself - Mako Nishimoto, who fittingly is Japanese.  She played the role of Cio-Cio San, the lead character in the pompous Puccini opera.  Oh yeah her death scene here was as melodramatic as they can get!

Well, she was quite gracious last night, patiently writing autographs and having her picture taken with many Filipino opera enthusiasts.  Definitely not diva-esque in attitude although talent-wise, her voice fits that of a true diva just fine! 

I will try to find some videos of her other performances so that you can see and hear her fabulous voice!

Mexican Tenor Dante Alcala as Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly

Mexican tenor Dante Alcala played B.F. Pinkerton in last night's Madame Butterfly.  Pinkerton is the cad American soldier who had an affair with Madame Butterfly and just like many real American GIs, left their seeds scattered around the world, fatherless and unacknowledged.  

He did a fine performance last night, with a voice that was robust and demanding.  He also humanized the role, without making the audience particularly hate him.  

When I got this picture, I spoke to Senyor Alcala in Spanish and thankfully he understood what I said!  He speaks good English though!

Camille Lopez-Molina: Breathtaking as Suzuki, in Madame Butterfly

I can't say enough of how impressed Vic and I were with this Filipina soprano, Camille Lopez-Molina, in Madame Butterfly last night.  Vic and I thought that she was the best performer there!  She has a fantastic voice and she essayed the role of Suzuki, the servant of Cio-Cio San really well.  

You should hear this woman sing!  She practically rocked the CCP as her robust voice reverberated around the theater.  She's from the UP College of Music and because of her, I'm excited to see Dulaang UPs Noli Me Tangere - the opera version next month na ata.  I just hope I won't watch it with pesky college kids who have to make a reaction paper for it!

Una Buena Manera Para Disfrutar El Opera

Creo que el opera puede ser intimidante entonces estoy sugiriendo una buena manera para disfrutarlo.  Lo que hago es escucho a su musica antes lo veo.  Eso manera, ya estoy familiarizado con la musica y llego a disfrutar el opera más.  

Por ejemplo, anoche, el opera Madame Butterfly estaba organizado en el Centro de Cultura de las Filipinas.  Lo que hizo era escuché a la musica una semana antes del opera, entonces, ya estaba familiarizado con la musica.  Me gustó unas de canciones anoche entonces aunque habia unas partes aburrida, siempre me hizo despierto cuando ellas cantaron mis canciones favoritos!
